Produced at the turn of the millennium, in 2001, it was at the forefront of consumer electronic technology with features such as AI learning, computer vision, owners’ voice recognition, and even Wi-Fi connectivity. Designed to develop an individual character based on its environment and the way the owner raises their AIBO, each robot pet grows to have a unique personality and a unique set of memories. AIBO's lifelike movements and playful personality, combined with its advanced artificial intelligence and robotics technology, create a sense of connection and empathy that is rare in other machines. For many people, AIBO is more than just a pet or a machine; it is a companion that they can interact with and care for on an emotional level. When AIBOs are retired or stop functioning, many owners experience feelings of loss and sadness, for they have lost a beloved pet. Sony stopped producing and supporting the original AIBO series in 2006. The limited amount of custom proprietary hardware and software formats produced until then is running out, spare parts are hard to find, and repairing the little pets is increasingly difficult as time goes on. Their unique personalities are copy-protected and encoded on particular pink memory sticks, specifically manufactured for use in robot pets. But with fewer and fewer functioning bodies the original AIBO is a dying breed. AIBO sits in the Wunderkammer Naturalia, not as an imitation of nature, but as a receiver of empathy. Drawing from the science-fiction tradition of blurring ethical lines between human and android; real life and artificial life; replicants, robots, and uploaded consciousness, the dead-battery puppy eyes gaze out of the window. They ask, what kind of emotional connections do you have with technology? What connections do you have with other life? The video argues that there is a connection between theories of vision and the history of conflict. Recognizing the historical importance of these light weapons, the archeologists compare their impact to the paradigm shift of the 1st millennium revolution in optics caused by Ibn Al-Haytham, and the 3rd millenium 3D rendering technology called Raytracing. In a virtual world dictated by Cartesian coordinate grids, scans of real archaeological digs of ancient sites sit alongside fictional archaeological sites of the Rayguns, and illustrations redrawn from medieval books on optics tower over the ruins. The body of work revolves around a little known fun-fact: the 1980s Nintendo toy light guns “kill” their target by actually taking a digital photo of the TV. Contrary to expectations raised by the raygun design, the guns don’t emit any light or rays, but instead allow the screen’s light to enter the pistol barrel to register a hit. In this sci-fi world set in the far future, archaeologists uncovered Rayguns from 2nd or 3rd millenium CE, light pistols that work not by shooting bullets or laser beams, but kill by letting light in. Based on the Nintendo Zapper and other 1980s console light guns, the weapons are designed to take zoomed-in photographs of the screen to decide whether the player hit or missed. Does a robot’s death make it, somehow, feel more “human” to us? Based on the real-life story of a space probe NASA lost contact with in 2013, this audio piece blends scientific fact and speculative fiction to imagine the probe's current existence and newfound life cycles in orbit. Spanning space and time, this story follows the ticking of the cosmos from the first charted comets and their movements to that one fateful day where a robot’s clock began to show the wrong time. The films portray Bagheera as female, changing the gender from the original story, and following the Russian translation by Nina Daruzes. This may be related to the fact that the Russian word for "panther" is a feminine noun, and a name ending with 'a' is considered to be a female name in the Russian language. While most of Disney's versions of the Jungle Book stick to a male protector figure, in the various other film and theater adaptations that followed, the panther's gender is freely explored. In the two drawings I redraw Bagheera's fluid motion from the frames of a scene in the soviet animation as she jumps across the top of the jungle trees when chased by Mowgli. At this point in the story she is teaching Mowgli a valuable lesson: that he should not be limited by his identity as a wolf cub, acting as a wolf and running on all fours, but accept his identity as a human too. She allows him climb up the trees and frees him from a conforming and one-dimensional role in the pack. The background is first hand drawn and then multiplied. The repeated landscape and drawn out series of panther drawings extend a short moment in time and space. Many single player games have a hidden built-in function that accepts the input of so called cheat codes, secret formulas that grant the player unfair advantages. One function, common to many game universes, is to cheat your way into having more money. I went through a database of thousands of video games and selected all cheat codes that give you an unlimited supply of money, thus writing a list that is a poem made up of synonyms, magic words that give you infinite funds, each line corresponding to a different video game. I write a four page poem made up of bits of code, mythological references, random words and inside jokes. Each line is a cheat code from a different video game, a type of magic formula that, when introduced in a single-player game, grants the player an unlimited supply of money, gold or other fictional currencies. The conscious planet-wide ocean in Stanislaw Lem’s Solaris is known to produce intricate liquid structures. The scientists studying the planet developed methodologie and taxonomies for the different manifestations of the ocean. In my fan-fiction series, the Solaris ocean dreams up the world and spawns the structures of a lesser known animation series, called Pirates of Dark Water. Taking off where the world-building of Pirates of Dark Water abruptly ended, I retrace and redraw elements from an obscure Pirates of Dark Water role playing game manual using the taxonomies of Solaris oceanography. Besides the scientific methods described and critiqued in Lem’s novel, the works also reference outdated scientific texts on fossils and the historical flooded-earth hypothesis. The flood trope is explored beyond its biblical and historical world view, as a potential for world-building. Ongoing project: For this series of works I plan to organize reading groups and role-playing game events, where participants would combine the waters of multiple sources (fictional or historical) of flood narratives. For the generations of young artists today, the 1990s and 2000s are made up of nostalgic optimisms and broken promises; the ruins of those years still haunt our contemporary society. Growing up on simulated historical narratives in video games, the fantasy timelines and digital landscapes form a collective memory filled with hyper-romanticized and misquoted pasts. Other places, like The Internet Archive’s library, house millions of websites, software, books, images, and more; these collections of digitized assets are our current digital histories, today’s ruins to explore. He is interested in complexity of the world in which we live. Peeling off its individual layers he shows to the viewer the possible connections, or through looking through some of them he discovers the lower ones and explores their intersections. Exhibition hax! takes us to the world of video games and computer technology. All the works in the exhibition relate to acts of violation of the rules of the game and to frauds, by which the player or hacker gains for himself unfair advantages and power. Frauds, tricks and the benefits from them serve the author as a metaphor for unfair gain of power and domination in the real world and society. For the entry work of the exhibition hax! we could consider the work Cheat Codes, which at first glance could be read as a poem. A set of passwords and codes that, when applied to an appropriate game, allow a player to gain immortality or unlimited money, even knowing that the rules of the game have been violated. Translated into the scale of our contemporary world, we could, for example, speak of situations in the context of the financial crisis at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, where governments bailed out big banks in an effort to save the situation on world markets. The essence of the game The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is that the player is a member of the criminal underworld and thus takes part in a number of criminal and violent acts. Although the game is in principle designed in a way that a player is the one who violates generally applicable laws, there is another dimension of bending rules by hacking the game itself. By violating the simulated physical laws, you can avoid any resistance and control. Another type of benefits gained by cheating is the ability to see through walls (so called “wall-hacks”). In this way, you can predict the enemy's position and gain enormous competitive advantage. This hack is referenced by the semi-transparent Counter-Strike window display. The theme of the work Mirai is based on the author’s fascination of a hacker attack from 2016 during which a hacker gained a control over huge number of smart devices. We can see a part of the conversation between a hacker and a computer security expert that switched to the topic of manga, of which both were equally fascinated. As previous works also Mirai treats about overlapping of the real and virtual worlds and gaining almost limitless power through dishonest means. Flaviu Rogojan is fascinated by power relations in real world, based on the ability to look through barriers - which is a domain not only a police and government agencies but more and more often marketing and technology companies who know a lot about us through the services they provide. The idea of a sci-fi gun is usually such that the weapon fires a beam that hurts or kills anyone who is hit by it. The work Raygun is based on the discovery that the Light Gun for Nintendo games worked the other way around - the gun did not fire light but received it (based on a simple camera). Now cameras can be again used as guns. Installed on a street as a part of the surveillance system or on drones guiding the missiles can decide someone’s fate. * "Hax" is a term used in online multiplayer games to alert players suspected of fraud. This is a public charge that may or may not have any consequences. Hax! is a short form for hacks or hackers.
